DHS earns "silver" in a national Best Public High Schools list.

In the latest issue of U.S.News & World Report  to hit the stands (December 10), the magazine features a "best public high schools" list. The ranking formula includes several indicators such as college readiness of students and academic performance of disadvantaged students.

"At DHS, we have high expectations for all of our students," said Principal Debbie Freeman. "Our DHS family, employees and students, are working so very hard and it is exciting to have those efforts recognized in this way. In addition, I believe it is not just recognition of the work going on at our school but the work of the entire school district. We have improved what we are doing at all levels and it is nice to see the results beginning to materialize."

DHS Awarded "Silver" by Governor's Office of Student Achievement - Tuesday, January 12, 2010

The Governor's Office of Student Achievement recently awarded Dalton High School a "silver" highest performance award.  These awards are based on Georgia High School Graduation Test Scores as well as the school's adequate yearly progress designation.

“Dalton High School achieves these high scores through a commitment from teachers, staff, students, and parents,” said Mona Howell, assistant principal and advanced programs coordinator at Dalton High School. “We offer an array of advanced programs and opportunities for students to improve their skills, but success requires parental support and students who want to achieve.”

Tutoring opportunities before, after, and during a “skinny period” as part of the school day allow students to get extra help with math and other subjects. Students also have a graduation coach.

“Our goal is to graduate students with the skills they need to be successful in the next stage of life,” said Howell. “We’re proud to receive this award and are committed to continued improvement. Our encouragement of advanced classes, the skinny period, and tutoring programs are really paying off for our students.”
