The Dalton Board of Education is a publicly elected body of five members. Each serves a four-year term and receives no pay for this service. Day-to-day operations are directed by the superintendent.
Danny Crutchfield, Chairman
Danny Crutchfield is the director of corporate training and organizational development for Shaw Industries; as well as the director of the Shaw Learning Academy. (The Shaw Learning Academy is recognized as a Top 125 Training Organization by Training Magazine). Mr. Crutchfield is a graduate of Dalton High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from the College of Business at the University of Tennessee. He is married and has two children who graduated from Dalton High School. Mr. Crutchfield began his second term in office in January 2012.
Rick Fromm, M.D., Vice-Chairman
Dr. Rick Fromm is a surgeon with a Dalton medical practice. He is a graduate of Dalton High School and completed his undergraduate work at the University of Georgia. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia, and completed his surgical training at ETSU James H. Quillen College of Medicine. Dr. Fromm is married and has two children that have graduated from Dalton High School and one child currently attending Dalton Public Schools. Dr. Fromm began his third term in office in January 2012.
Steve Laird is the director of contract administration with Shaw Industries, Inc. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and Finance from Florida State University. Mr. Laird's wife is a teacher at Dalton Middle School and they have two children who are graduates of Dalton High School. Mr. Laird began his first term in office in January 2014.
Sherwood Jones, III
Sherwood Jones, III is a partner/principal in the local architectural firm, Carlson & Jones Architects. He is a graduate of Dalton High School, and holds a Bachelor's in Architecture from Auburn University, and a Master of Science in Management from Georgia Institute of Technology. He is married and has four children—a daughter at Dalton High, twins at Brookwood School, and a baby girl. Mr. Jones began his first term in office in January 2014.
Tulley Johnson, Treasurer
Tulley Johnson recently retired from the United States Postal Service and is an active member of the Dalton community. He has served in leadership positions in a variety of community organizations including the Dalton Recreation Commission, the Family Crisis Center, Boy Scouts, Dalton Education Foundation, and many others. Mr. Johnson is a graduate of Dalton High School and Georgia State University.He is married and his children are graduates of Dalton High School. Mr. Johnson began his fourth term in office in January 2012.
Jim Hawkins, Ph.D., Superintendent
Dr. Jim Hawkins is the superintendent of Dalton Public Schools and serves as the secretary for the Board of Education. He joined the district in January 2009 after a 36 year career in Texas where he was a teacher, administrator, and superintendent in three school districts. Dr. Hawkins came to Dalton following his recruitment by the Dalton Board of Education due to his match with its educational philosophy and commitment to the principle that students only truly learn from work that they find meaningful, relevant and engaging. In addition, he and his wife Nancy transplanted to Georgia to move closer to grandchildren. Dr. Hawkins earned his doctorate, master's, and bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas. Jim continues his learning every day through actively pursuing purposeful conversations with colleagues, community leaders, and friends.
